Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) aims to

Understand a person's lived experience in the wider context of their life - using qualitative research

Interpreting Phenomenological Analysis aims to understand how individuals experience and make sense of events in their own lives. It’s a qualitative, phenomenological approach that centers on the meaning of lived experience within the person’s broader life context and social world. The goal isn’t to test hypotheses or compare groups, nor to generalize findings to a whole population. Instead, it uses small, purposive samples and in-depth data collection to explore, in detail, how someone constructs meaning from their experiences, with the researcher interpreting those meanings through their own perspective. This double interpretative process yields rich, nuanced insights into a person’s lived reality.

Compare large populations statistically

Test a predetermined hypothesis with experiments
